Nebraska Are Likely Voting to Legalize Medical Marijuana In November 2020
In July, the Nebraska Medical Marijuana Campaign submitted over 182,000 signatures to qualify for the November 2020 ballot. Activists behind the campaign to legalize medical marijuana were announced on Wednesday, August 26, 2020, that the secretary of state’s office has collected enough signatures for the initiative to be on the November ballot. However, a law firm in Nebraska representing unnamed residents filed a last-minute legal request, an attempt to prevent voters to decide on the measure.
Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana submitted over 182,000 signatures last month, surpassing the 121,669 required to qualify for the ballot.
Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana sent an email blast that while the secretary of state has not officially certified the initiative, the office staff informed them that they submitted enough valid signatures. Regardless of the signature qualification, the law firm sent a letter to the secretary of state on Wednesday, August 26, 2020, claiming that the legalization measure violates the state’s “single-subject” rule that precludes ballot initiatives that cover more than one issue, and arguing that the proposal “cases confusion” and “creates doubt about what will be authorized after the election.”
The secretary of state is planning on making a decision regarding the legal challenge by Thursday, a Nebraska Public Radio reporter said.
