Vermont 2022 Adult-Use Cannabis Update
Towns across Vermont plan to vote next week on allowing adult-use retail cannabis sales. Around 40 communities will participate in the vote. Over the past two years, 33 municipalities have opted-in to retail cannabis sales. The state hopes to finalize the adoption of rules for cannabis establishments, medical programs, and dispensaries by March 1, 2022.
Meanwhile, licenses are set to launch on April 1, with the state looking to set up a license preapproval process. The preapproval process opens on March 16.
Vermont legalized recreational cannabis in 2018 and established a system to tax and regulate the production and sale of marijuana through licensed recreational marijuana businesses in 2019.
In the state of Vermont, there are 6 types of licenses available:
- Cultivator
- Wholesaler
- Product Manufacturer
- Retailer
- Testing Laboratory
- Integrated License
The application timeline is as follows:
- April 1, 2022—The state will open the application period for small cultivators, integrated licensees, and testing labs
- May 1, 2022—The state will open the application period for all cultivators
- July 1, 2022—The state will open the application period for product manufacturers and wholesalers
- September 1, 2022—The state will open the application period for retailers
The Board will consider applications under a priority system that will prioritize social equity applicants when considering applications for Vermont’s adult-use cannabis licenses.
Vermont is expected to begin retail sales in October 2022.
