Alabama: A new bill that would significantly increase the number of licenses Alabama could award to companies to grow and sell medical marijuana was met with considerable opposition Wednesday, much to the disappointment of the bill’s sponsor and supporters.
Sen. David Sessions, R-Grand Bay, said Senate Bill 276 is an effort to satisfy the companies that sued the state over its license awarding process. Were lawmakers to not take any legislative action to resolve the issue, Sessions warned that litigation could continue to delay the state’s rollout of medical marijuana for years. As for those who spoke in opposition to the bill, Sessions said his sole concern was getting products to patients as quickly as possible.

Hawaii: The effort to pass a marijuana legalization bill in Hawaii this year ended on Tuesday afternoon. In a statement, Rep. Kyle Yamashita (D), who chairs the House Finance Committee, announced that his panel would not hear the legalization measure, SB 3335, ahead of a legislative deadline this week. The decision effectively kills the bill, which had already passed the full Senate and several House committees this session before only barely advancing in an initial House floor vote earlier this month.
Kentucky: When questioned, the Cabinet reiterated that within a few months, more information would be available to the public. “… the Program will promulgate additional regulations covering how businesses can become licensed,” the Cabinet said in an email to LEO Weekly. “When the Program has additional information related to business licensing and other information it will share that information through its website, on social media, and through other means.”
Team Kentucky, which has put together a task force of people to tackle medical marijuana in the Commonwealth, will begin holding meetings in April to provide updates on cannabis in Kentucky. Their first meeting, which anyone can join, is set to be held on April 19.
New Hampshire: New Hampshire state representatives are not giving any ground in the debate over how to legalize marijuana in the state. The House Finance Committee on Tuesday advanced legislation that some state senators are calling a dealbreaker. Representatives decided to leave the bill much as the House Commerce Committee crafted it, with 15 agency stores, which would be regulated by the state but less intensively than they would be under a franchise model.
