New York Cannabis Industry Hits $1 Billion in Retail Sales
New York Cannabis Industry Hits Huge Milestone
New York’s cannabis industry hit $1 Billion in cumulative sales since the end of 2022 this week.
“Today, we recognize the $1 billion milestone as more than just a number — it’s a testament to the hard work of those who helped build the strongest cannabis industry in the nation: one that prioritizes equity, ensures public safety, and empowers communities,” Hochul said.
In 2024 alone, New York did $757.8 Million in retail sales.
New York Cannabis Licensing Updates
According to the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM), over half of the licenses were awarded to Social and Economic Equity applicants. Social Equity aims to ensure that individuals from marginalized communities, especially those affected by the War on Drugs, can participate in and benefit from the cannabis industry.
Over 5,250 New York cannabis licenses, permits, and registrations were issued or provisionally approved. The breakdown of the licenses is as follows:
- 221 Cultivator Licenses
- 292 Processor Licenses
- 185 Distributor Licenses
- 272 Microbusiness Licenses
- 569 CAURD Licenses (Conditional AU Retail Dispensary)
- 448 Dispensary Licenses
270 adult-use retail dispensaries have opened for business, and more are expected to begin operating.
What’s next for New York cannabis licensing in 2025?
There are high hopes that the market will reach $2 Billion in 2025.
OCM” ‘s Director of Market Policy believes it is “Still a little bit too early yet to forecast precisely when the second billion will come through. Still, I am certainly comfortable saying that we will hit that second billion dollars sometime in 2025,” Kagia said in an interview with NEWS10.
State regulators also believe that the number of licensed retail dispensaries will likely reach over 625 by the end of this year.
Currently, Processor Type 3 Banding Licenses are available for application. These licenses authorize the brand licensee to enter into white-label agreements with duly licensed cannabis processors who will manufacture the brand’s cannabis products.
Industry Challenges
Some regulators believe retail dispensary licenses should be capped at 1,600 to prevent over-supply. The OCM is still reviewing applications from the November and December 2023 queues.
The agency is facing lawsuits because applicants in the December queue could apply for a license without securing locations or notifying local municipalities, which is required under state law.
Future Outlook for the New York Cannabis Industry and Licensees
New York’s cannabis industry is projected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 16.9% from 2024 to 2030. The state has also cracked down on illegal shops, driving more revenue to legal cannabis dispensaries. New York continues to approve licenses as the OCM works to get through the queue.
